Schedule

Hi, Everybody: I got an email today from one of the members, saying that it's been difficult to swim in the Summer because of the limited use of lanes and general overcrowding in the pool. This has been an ongoing problem, but it should be resolved in a few weeks.

I talked to Chris Neahry today, who told me that on August 9th we'll go back to our full normal schedule at the pool (MWF 7:00-9:30PM) and have three full lanes again.

He explained that because of reduced hours during the summer, there are fewer opportunities for any of the pool programs, and said that he has very little flexibility in terms of scheduling, or even the ability to add an extra lane when the pool is crowded. We've agreed to have a discussion next March before the Summer schedule is created where we can hopefully resolve many of these ongoing problems.

Please keep in mind that technically, we do not pay for pool time during the Summer, although the team does pay for three other quarters throughout the year.

Hope you are having a great summer. Hope to see you this fall.

MGM finishes 46th of 228 Teams At Nationals

Hi, everybody: I want to congratulate everyone for championship performances at this year's State and Nationals competitions, where MGM swimmers made this the fastest season in team history.

meetlogo.jpg News From Nationals: Fielding only seven swimmers in Atlanta, MGM took 46th of 228 Clubs. The men's team finished 24th overall, while men's and women's team members set 10 new all-time team records and shattered 18 team age-group records. This is a really special story considering how we were one of the smallest teams at the competiton. To read more about this meet and some of the outstanding performances, visit http://www.mgmswimteam.org.

New Records I've made a lot of progress in updating the team records for this season, but haven't had time to update everyone's State performances. If you don't see your name in the records, don't worry, you can add it yourself by logging in, or just be patient and I'll get to it later this week. I really encourage you to check this out because the new system displays everyone's personal bests in every event--just hover over the event link to see your name in the record books.

Special Thanks to John Javorski, who tirelessly posted workouts and gave encouragement during the whole season. I have no doubt it would have been impossible to reach the speeds we did without his help. Thanks, John!

Summer Hours are right around the corner at the AgSchool, although I'm not certain exactly when these will be. Please check with this site, or follow us on Twitter ( http://www.twitter.com/mgmswimteam ) for updates about the new schedule.

Set 'Em Up, Knock 'Em Down

MGM Is On Fire!

In Elgin, MGM men smashed three state relay records, including the 800 yard freestyle relay (7:54.74); the 400-yard Medley (3:54.67); and the 400 Yard Freestyle relay (3:28.02).

Continuing at Fenwick, the team took second place and set an array of personal bests and team records. Among the highlights: In the 100 Yard Freestyle,  Chad Morris (47.5); John Javorski (49.16); Lonny Boeke (56.58); Mark Royko (59.44); Rachel Dickman (1:04).

Morris also posted a very impressive 100 yard Fly (52.64), followed by Javorski (49.16).

MGM swimmers also posted season-high times in the 50 Free: Morris (21.95) ; Javorski (22.19); Dan Campione (23.22); Boeke (26.04); Royko (26.21); Dickman (29.57); Sajn (28.28); Kettleson (39.87); Bik (44.83).

PS: In writing this message, I'm trying to include highlights from every swimmer. I'm certain I've missed some, though, so I apologize in advance. In the meantime, please manage your person race results at www.mgmswimteam.org !

serious.jpgSpecial Note: Now that we've broken all these records, I'm back to updating our team stats, which is both cool, and a tedious pain. Hopefully, you'll be able to help out by keeping track of your own times with our new Online Racing Stats feature that lets you post your own times whenever you want. In fact, if you want to, you could track every race result you've ever posted. (Yes, even the unsanctioned ones.) Click here to see a video about this new feature and give it a shot. I've also put together another instructional video for you if you need help. You can see that one here. This is 'Beta' grade software, so let me know if you run into any bugs. I'll try to address them as soon as possible.

Also...The deadline for registering for State is April 18th. I've posted a direct link the registration page from our site under upcoming meets.

MGM Dives Into Mid-Season

It's hard to believe that there's only two months more of competitive short-course swimming left this season (not counting Nationals), but it's true. Unless another meet pops up we've only got three more before State Championships towards the end of April. Here's what's in store:

MGMShirts-Embroidered.gifFirst up: The Elgin Blue Waves Meet on March 14th. A handful of us went to this meet last year, and it's highly recommended. It's a bit of a hike from the South Side, but the facility is really nice. Remember to send in your entries soon, unless you want to pay extra for deck entries. The site information is now posted on our site, along with an entry card.

Next: Fenwick on March 28th--always fun. Lyons is said to come next on April 11th. There's still no information about the specifics of that meet but check back soon for updates.

Finally, the 2010 ILMSA State Championships, April 23- April 25. The registration for this year's State meet is already available online right here .

Team Notes:

There is No Practice tonight at Ag School, due to Pulaski Day in Chicago. (Follow link for full explanation, and a picture that for some reason reminds me a little bit of Dan.)

Rachel is in charge of this year's Team Swag, which is said to be arriving any minute now. Thanks, Rachel! Stay tuned!

Season starts fast, gets faster

Hi, Everybody: Just a few quick notes about MGM:

lattoff-sm.jpgFirst: Our Latoff meet went really well with some unbelieveable times for such an early part of the season. By some measures, we are posting race results that are about what you'd expect in March, or even at the State meet.

The team is looking strong right now: It's great to see newcomer Dan Campione posting some amazing times, Rachel Dickman and Karen Scobbie (pictured left) posting personal bests; Chad, John Javorski and Lonny hitting on all cylinders, while Mary Moore and Marilyn and John Miller are dominating their age groups. Really fun to see. It's amazing how much this team has evolved over the last few years – from basically a social group to a competitive team that has to be treated seriously at every meet.

Speaking of meets, it's not too late to sign up for the Evanston meet coming up this Sunday. You have until Thursday to register by email for the meet. Details can be found on our web site. (Go to  and download a copy of the Evanston Masters January Meet Detail sheet.)

Finally, a ruling came out today from USMS saying that speed suits will be legal for lzr-racer.jpgShort Course Masters Swimming until June 1, 2010. That means that for the rest of this season, you can still wear a full-body suit that make you feel like a seal at Lincoln Park Zoo. After that, they're gone forever.  If you have never worn a suit, but want to feel at least a little bit like Micheal Phelps must feel all the time, you can still pick up a greatly discounted suit -- but HURRY, John Javorski checked with Blue 70 today, and they told him that they were almost completely sold out, and have no plans to redevelop them. Here's a link, if you're interested: http://www.blueseventy.com/store/us/product.php?productid=20&cat=0&bests...

2010 Season Info

MGM is now open accepting 2010 Season dues online at mgmswimteam.org. Dues will remain the same as last season--$115 for the year. (Plus the $35 dollars to USMS for your master's card.)

Remember, registration is a two-part process--first, get your Master's Card from USMS (there's a link on our site, or just click here-- https://www.clubassistant.com/club/USMS.cfm?l=21 MAKE SURE YOU SELECT 'MGM' IF ASKED FOR A CLUB:); next, pay team dues by credit card online at our site. In order to keep the number of headaches to a minimum, we ask that you pay your dues by Friday, Jan 15th.

Next, The web site has been updated with a list of upcoming meets, and a new calendar feature that will help you plan out your season. Most of the meets that we are likely to attend have been listed on the site, and there's actually quite a few of them this year--eight so far, and there will probably be more. Meets will be added as soon as we get word that they are up. In any case, our first meet is this Sunday in Naperville.

Note: There will be a lot of improvements coming to the site in the next week or two--including a section that will let you update your personal best meet times. Stay tuned....

PS: Congratulations to everyone who swam at the TYR meet over the weekend. MGM had several 1st group participants in what is either the last meet of the long course season, or the first meet for 2010. Either way, it's great to have MGM back in the competition lanes.

Season 7 Starts Now!

Split Practices Resume Wednesday

Hey, everybody: I hope you had a great summer.

I'm happy to report that MGM will begin its 7th Season at the Ag School starting Wednesday night (September 9th) at 7:00 PM.

That means that we will return to our standard season practice schedule of split 1.5 hour segments: First Shift: MWF 7-8:15; Second Shift: MWF 8:15-9:30. We have a combined practice on Sundays, 11-1. We are incredibly lucky to have this resource, so lets fill up those lanes this year as we get ready for another season of MGM swimmming.

Hey, First shift: Please note that as in the past, our practices technically aren't supposed to start until 7:30. However, lane lines should be installed at 7 PM, and you shouldn't have any trouble getting your workouts in withing the alotted time slot.

Notes: I haven't heard anything from Lincoln-Way about the status of their team, or whether an early-season Green-Way Classic will be scheduled.

Also...For MGM swimmers about to commit to Big Shoulders, the lake temperatures are just fine: (Finally getting up over 65º. It looks like it will stay warm this week, although the early forecast is for rain on Saturday and Sunday.)

News From MGM Swim Team

Updates and Clarifications on the pool schedule:

I talked to Chris Neary at Ag School today, and he told me that the new hours were the same as those we had last Summer. I'm not certain about that--he may be right--but I'm always a little surprised when we don't show up on the official schedule, while other groups seem to have no issue getting listed.

Neary told me that we will return to our normal hours next September.

In a clarification: the new hours start next Monday.

I've posted an entry on the site on this topic--your comments are welcomed.

Thanks,

Mark

New Summer Hours at Ag School

Hi, Everybody:

Every Summer, our hours at the Ag School Pool change. I was told last Monday that our news times wouldn't change until next week, but last night the new times kicked in.

Due to budget cuts, the pool hours have been severely curtailed. As of last night, our summer hours are:

Mon, Wed, Friday 7-8 PM
Sunday: 11-12 PM.

This is a big, big change from previous years, and some of our members were very surprised to find that no hours are officially listed on the pool schedule for the Masters Program. (This is really surprising considering that we are one of the only consistent revenue sources for the Ag School Pool.) Instead, we were told that we will be given lanes, but that we have to share them with people who want to use them--something we try to do anyway.

If I felt like complaining about this would change anything, I'd say so, but I think there's very little we can do. I'm sure this is a move by the administration to try to get the most use out of the pool in the shortest amount of hours. So, I guess we'll have to do our best to share the lanes between the first and second workout groups.

Please visit the team website at www.mgmswimteam.org for more updates.
